Management

Looking back at this semester
We have not only learn about management
We learn to put vision in to our life
By planning, brainstorming, and decision making
We learn what kind of Profile System we are
And how well we work in teams
We also learn from each other
By commenting on our blogs
It's been a great semester
And I hope everyone pass!

Being a S-C Profile

After reflecting on the Personal Profile System, I think it accurately describe how I management style pretty well. I am a S-C profile which stands for Steadiness and Conscientiousness. This means that there is "Emphasis on cooperating with others to carry out task." and "Emphasis is on working conscientiously within existing circumstances to ensure quality and accuracy." I think of myself as a team player event though I have more power than the other person. I certainly take others into consideration when working on a task. I am also a person that ensures great quality and accuracy when given a task. I am the kind of person that like to maintain a status quo. I am working on trying to gain the qualities of a D. This just means that I want to be more firm with others. I think this personal profile system does help with personal interactions because everyone has a different style of managing. It helps us to sympathize with others when we have to work with people we don't necessarily agree with their ideas.

Communicating via Blogs

I think blogging as a communication tool for the class was very interesting and innovative idea. It gave me a chance to know my classmates without speaking to them face to face. I am usually a shy person when talking to classmates and getting to know them. Most of the time I usually only get to know the classmates when I participate in group projects with them. Blogging gave me a new perspective on the activities we worked o. It gave me a chance to know that my group was not the only ones that were having difficulty with the activity given. It also showed me how others planned their activities out that gave them success. For me, I think blogging was a great way to learn from others outside of the classroom. Blogging also gave me a sense of time management. When Professor Kurpis gives us an assignment and deadline, it's the same as if my boss gave me an assignment with a deadline to finish the assignment. By commenting on others, it's like your boss telling you that you have to send documents to other companies at a certain time. It gave a sort of hands on expeience. I think this was a great way of taking charge of 20% of our grade for the class. Even though this was a great assignment for a class, I sadly won't keep writing in this blog after the end of this class because I have a lot to do for my part-time job and doing class full-time.

A Look into My Future! =)

When I got this assignment, I had the giggles. No, I am not crazy, the reason why I giggled is because I have a five year plan with my boyfriend. My boyfriend and I have been dating for 5 years now and he for somewhat reason wants to get married now. I told him I wasn't ready yet because we are too young. So I came up with a five year plan, it gives me enough time for both of us to improve.

My five year goals are
1) Get a job that will give me stability and that will allow me to travel for my career.
2) Own our first condo together.
3) Get married and have kids before I'm 30.

In order to achieve number one, I will have to start looking for study/work abroad opportunities for this summer. I have to graduate from Baruch with a BBA degree. For me to accomplish number 2, I have to start saving with my boyfriend now. We are currently putting money into a savings account every month. We have to start looking at the price range and neighborhoods that we want to live in. In order to accomplish number 3, I have to accomplish number 1 and 2. I need number one because I want to have children when I have enough money to raise them. I need number 2 so I can provide a great living environment for my kids to grow. This might sound pretty silly to many of you but this is my goals to accomplish in five years!

McDonald Experience

It was about 5:15pm when I stepped into McDonalds after work. I first notice that there was a huddle instead of lines so it looked pretty packed with people on line. As I walked closer it was not packed with customers, it was just a lot of people in groups. I continued to look at what was going on with the workers at McDonalds. First I noticed there were two cashiers, two people in the back working, and a man standing around in the back. I noticed that the workers had different color shirts on; one had a blue shirt on that was in the back standing around while everyone else had a black shirt on. I wasn’t sure what the color shirt meant but I’m guessing the one with the blue one was a shift manager. I also notice they were understaffed. They usually have a person working on the fries. As I watched the staff at work, I realize they are really disorganized. First you see the cashier yelling at the man standing in the back to fix the coffee machine. The man comes out from the back and tries to fix the coffee machine but nothing was wrong with the coffee machine to begin with. Then it was my turn to tell the cashier my order.
I walked up to the woman cashier wearing a black McDonalds’s shirt and specifically said, “Can I get a hamburger with 4 pickles and a small fries with no salt.” She started to push buttons on her machine and then she was like “Wait. Can you repeat that order?” I said again but slower this time, “Can I get a hamburger with 4 pickles and a small fries with no salt?” After I mention the hamburger again, she asked “four?” referring to the pickles. I said “yes” and she began to look for the button for extra pickles. She then had to ask the guy in the blue shirt where the button for the extra pickles was and he helped her with the button. Then she told the kitchen “I need a burger with 4 pickles.” The man in the back asked the cashier to repeat the order one more time. Then she came back to me and said “You want a small fries without salt right?” I said yes. She then asked the guy in the blue shirt for the fries. There was a fresh batch of fries there and the guy was about to put salt and she screamed “Don’t add the salt. The customer wants no salt.” The cashier then told me my total and I paid.
While I was paying, the cashier handed me my food and I asked for my receipt. I then took a look at my receipt and I only saw extra pickles with no quantity and it did not say no salt for the fries. I then explained to the cashier that it was a class assignment and she then giggled a little and complied by writing the number 4 where the order for the pickles and no salt where the order for the fries were with her initials.
The overall experience was not that long when she finally what I wanted for my order. It took a couple of minutes but it was only because she had me repeat my order and tell the kitchen what I needed. She was very polite even though I had a special specific orders. When I got my ordered, I sat down and open my burger and counted fours pickles, and then I tried the fries and there was no salt on it.
If I had to rate the effectiveness of the manufacturing process or order preparation, I would have to say they didn’t do a really good job. First the cashier had to go to ask the guy in the blue shirt where the button is for the extra pickles. Also she had to tell the kitchen my order for the four pickles and the guy in the blue shirt to not put salt on the fries. I think this would have slowed things down if I had come in a later time when it was busier. The purpose of the machine is to tell the kitchen my exact order so they can prepare it efficiently. The machine for this order was not efficient because she had to tell the kitchen what I wanted. The organization was pretty good because the cashier knew who she had to ask to get me the correct order and she knew that it was better for her to communicate with the kitchen about my order. For communications, this McDonalds could have done better. The cashier had to repeat to the guy in the kitchen the specifics of my order and she also had to remind the man in the blue that I wanted no salt in my fries. The customer service was pretty good because the cashier didn’t seem to be bothered when I gave them the order and did everything she could to give me the right order. If I was brought in to McDonalds to help them improve, I would change the machine so in the pickles section, there can be a quantity. I would also tell them to teach the cashiers every button on the machine.

Hands On Decision Making

During the decision making activity, I handled the activity with a compromising way. I felt like the class was all over the board with their grades on the exam so I was going to suggest a curve but someone said it before me. I thought that was a good way of raising the grade for the ones that didn’t do so well on the exam while the others get a boost for a higher grade. When I heard the idea of dropping the lowest grade and doubling the highest plus extra credit I felt like I had more of a compete to win vibe because I wanted that since I did pretty well on this exam and I wouldn’t have to worry about getting a bad grade on the other exam. I also had a afterthought for the class, I mean if they do bad on this test, and this is the higher out of the both grades, they would still fail wouldn’t they? But with my compete to win mentality I didn’t care because this would boost up my grade, it will also bring score a letter grade higher which I was pretty happy with. The exercise went pretty well until someone decided that they wanted the essay part on the test. I felt like since Professor Kurpis emphasized that many people had problem with the essay, that person should be considerate that not everyone had problems with the essay because they didn’t study well enough but because English is their second language. I mean I was born here but I felt like it’s better to accommodate other because it’s not their fault that they weren’t born in the United States. I really felt like the essay part shouldn’t be on the next exam. Other than that I think the class handled the situation pretty well.

Egg Project Status:FAIL

The egg project was was very interesting, even though my group failed to keep the egg safe. When we first started with the egg, every one in the group had an idea to express. We defined our goal, understood that we needed to keep the egg from breaking and show 50 percent of the egg. I felt we were going through our ideas but played around with the alternatives. We asked if we could connect everything and make a fishing rod like contraption but that plan failed because we needed to let the egg go 10 feet in the air. We played around with our second alternative by make triangles to protect the egg and we went with the idea. But we fail to find the best way by combining the best of the first theory with the second theory. The group's strength was definitely that we gave each person a role when making the contraption. We also in the middle of making the contraption, one of my teammate and I had to try to write up the paper and make sure the paper is in the hand of whoever was dropping the contraption. The weakness was the whole group was trying to make the contraption all at once plus we tried to change the plan a little when we were making the contraption. I felt like the whole group wanted to make the contraption at once so I stepped back and let them do their job while I passed them the tape. After watching everyone let go of their contraption, we felt like we were one the right track with our first theory but then we misunderstood that the egg had to be drop at 10 feet. I felt that if we made our contraption on the first idea, our egg could have survived.
